GeoTagging: N95blog seeking information!

tagged with:No Tags

It is hard to write an article if you do not have hands-on information (Yes, this is a hint, Nokia :) )

I am trying to figure out whether or not it is possible to use GeoTagging on the Nokia N95.
For those not familiar with the term, this is what Wikipedia says:

Geotagging, also known as geocoding, is the insertion of latitude and longitude data into a file or document, such as a digital photograph. In the same way that the time and date are encoded into digital photos, data that records the location where the picture was taken can also be added automatically using existing standard file formats like JPEG.

geotagged images related to map

You might understand that GeoTagging has many benefits, some examples:

  • Automated insertion of geographical data (doh, that is what it is all about)
  • Easier searching and finding pictures (if you have tons of pictures you would be able to search for e.g. “pictures taken in Rotterdam in July 2004“)
  • Enhanced possibilities for site like GoogleMaps and Flickr (you might think of maps being built by users’ pictures, or maybe even 3D implementations.)
  • You could use GeoTagged pictures to remember locations or use them as waypoints (You are on your way to a meeting and see a nice restaurant, snap a picture and after your meeting you use the GeoTag to navigate back to the restaurant)
  • Or maybe even as a source of information for somebody else (you send somebody an email with a picture of the café you want to meet him/her, which the receiving person can use to navigate, while knowing what to look for)

For a fact, the Nokia N95 has all the ingredients for GeoTagging (i.e. a camera and a (somehow) linked GPS device), but as far as I can see, it is only through third party software that the actual GeoTagging can take place. This is what I found so far and only from my humble observation. And as I am only 1 person, I might have missed the detailed information about this topic. I did not focus on searching for an answer just for the Nokia N95, but for S60 in general.

So, dear Readers of this blog, would you please be so kind to help me gathering information on ‘GeoTagging on S60 operated devices‘?

Anything you find, please post it with links in the comments, use the contact form or send me an email: jan [at] n95blog [dot] com

Thanks in advance!

This is something I’ve asked current Proto testers repeatedly, with no response.

    1. Does the battery allow you to realistically leave GPS on all day long?

    2. When you snap a picture, can you then send straight to Flickr and the geotag show up?

Honestly, I’ll be using ShoZu (since I don’t like the built-in method of uploading pics, too many clicks!) but it’s still something that’d be handy for storing the pics on my computer.

    frank & Ricky: Thanks!

In the Whirlpool forums Shozu is mentioned, as well as the concern for batterylife that Ricky mentions.

Besides Shozu, I had also found a service by Yahoo, called ZoneTag (claiming 2-click upload to Flickr) and it seems that Merkitys is also capable of adding GPS information….

    Let’s get some more!
