GPS Navigation reviews: Navigon Mobile Navigator 6 & ALK CoPilot Live for Symbian S60

As a teaser for 2 review series that are coming up, please check the following details and pictures of 2 brand new GPS navigation software packages:

Navigon Mobile Navigator 6

  • Excellent user interface
Look and understand. Easy, comprehensible steps make the navigation application more user-friendly than ever before.
  • Variable destination input
In addition to road names, MobileNavigator 6 also knows specific destinations. Worldwide destinations such as restaurants, hotels, museums, attractions and shopping centres are stored in memory and just waiting to be discovered.
  • Voice Input
MobileNavigator 6 understands the spoken word. Save your destinations acoustically and start navigation by voice command. No more time-consuming keystrokes and you enjoy more safety and driving comfort. (Device dependent)
  • “Take me home” Function
It’s great when the destination is “Home”. Even better when you are guided there at the simple touch of a button.
  • Route Planner
Time is expensive. Plan your route efficiently in advance. The route planner calculates how much time you need for all or part of the route. Appointments and departure times can then be planned ideally into your daily schedule.
  • Destination from Address Book
Transfer addresses from your Pocket PC or Mobile Phone into the destination input of MobileNavigator 6 and start to navigate. (Device dependent)

ALK CoPilot Live

  • Turn by turn voice guided satellite navigation on your phone. Just key in your destination and start driving.
  • Lightening-quick trip calculation. And if you miss a turn. CoPilot works out the best new route in seconds.
  • Designed for driver safety. In safety mode a map is only shown near a turn to avoid distracting the driver.
  • Detailed NAVTEQ street maps of the UK on your phone, the same as those found in a top-of–the-range BMW in-dash system.
  • Walking mode. Find the way around on foot using your phone.
  • Seamless, borderless door-to-door routing across Europe (with the optional European maps license).
  • Estimated time of arrival and distance remaining displayed on-screen.
  • Choice of ways to input address, including Postcodes.
  • 2D & 3D display with night mode.
  • Easy to set-up via pre-loaded 256MB storage card and automatic Bluetooth GPS set up.
  • Real-time location tracking on the Internet as standard.
  • Pre-trip planning mode.
  • Real-time traffic information and Speed Camera alerts

The reviews will be published in parts in the coming weeks, but I like to use this teaser post to ask YOU to submit questions regarding these two navigation solutions in combination with the Nokia N95.

Please ask clearly and specificly.

Does Navigon work with the internal GPS or only an external one?

Like to see how these two work with my N95 internal GPS. I found N95 GPS is slow to pick up signals. I’m still looking for good practical usage of the N95 GPS with better software. Like to hear your experience.

Yeah, I’d like to know if either of these products work with the internal GPS… I’m checking out Route66, which is coming up significantly short of filling TomTom’s shoes.

I’d love to know when TomTom is going to release an update for devices with an internal GPS.

I wonder how the point of interests are on them. So far, all navigation software I’ve used (including the mighty TomTom) has horrible POI capability. Google Maps seems to be able to locate just about any business by name and city/state accurately though, but it doesn’t handle turn-by-turn navigation.

    Hi there,

    My questions for both programs:

    - Can I create a route (multiple destinations) on the phone.
    - Can I still make voice calls (in and out) while navigating. Do the out voicecalls still support speech dialing? Smart2Go does!
    - Can I select adresses from the N95 phone book?
    - Is landscape mode supported
    - Can the software automatically use traffic information
    - Can I enter roadblocks and traffic jams on the phone.
    - Is there a button or voice command to find the nearest parkingspot or fuelstation (taking in account that when I am on a highway I don’t want to get off it).
    - Can navigon use preloaded maps and does it have a offline (non-internet connected) mode?
    - Does either one of the now the difference between byroads and mainroads for routing.
    - Power usage figure would be nice too! Smart to go with speakers and contineous lit screen does about two hours on a full battery.
