Top 8 Nokia Mobile Phones from the Future

tagged with:, ,

Fellow blogger Mads has written an interesting post about future changes to the way our mobile phones look and function.

Giving eight concept models from the Nokia labs.

Nokia Aeon

The Nokia Aeon might be the closest thing to today’s mobiles in this post. It looks just like a traditional mobile if it weren’t for the big touch screen that covers the full surface of the phone.

Just imagine what a big touch screen could do to your phone. A cluttered screen would be a thing of the past and the buttons on the phone could change depending on what you were doing right now. Start messaging and you get a full keyboard to write on, start gaming and get a game pad, etc.

Using the Nokia N95 as modem for a Mac over Bluetooth on Vodafone Live in Holland

tagged with:, , , , ,

I just spoke a friend who asked me whether I knew how to use a Nokia N95 wirelessly as modem for his Mac.

Funny thing is that I am bound to go on a short business trip where I was looking for the same. My Powerbook does not have any 3G dongle or wahtsoever and I too happen to have a plan with Vodafone…

FYI: I am using an Apple Powerbook G4 15″ with the latest update of Leopard (10.5.2) and a Nokia N95-1 with the one-but-last firmware (my bad, still have to update)

So, I searched a few forums and blogs and found the following to do for setting this up (to be clear: aim is to use a Nokia N95 as UMTS modem to connect a Apple/Mac to the internet…):

  1. Go to “Ross Barkman’s Home page” and download the Nokia 3G scripts for UMTS & EDGE
  2. Copy the 3 CID files into Library/Modem Scripts in Finder
  3. Use the “Setup Bluetooth device” wizard to connect your Nokia N95 to your Mac. Make sure to tick the box with “Access the Internet with your phone’s data connection”.
  4. In the last step, enter the following details (! Mind you, this is for Netherlands and Vodafone only! For other countries + operators, please check this list)
    • Phone vendor: Nokia
    • Phone Model: GPRS (GSM/3G)
    • Username: vodafone
    • Password: vodafone
    • APN: live.vodafone.com
    • CID: 1
  5. That’s it. Click “continue” and finalize the wizard.

Connect Bluetooth

Now, when you have your phone connected by Bluetooth and select “connect Bluetooth” in your Mac’s modem prefs… it automatically connects over UMTS using your phone’s bluetooth connection.

Easy does it and I am ready to go!

FM Aerial Accessory For Nokia N95 or similar

FM Radio Aerial For Nokia N95, N95 8Gb, and other Smartphones

Aerial for Nokia N95This simple aerial enables Smartphones such as the Nokia N95 to be operated as a stand-alone high quality FM radio, using the phones’ own loudspeakers. It conveniently replaces the headphone lead as an aerial source, and can be easily adjusted for optimum reception in any environment where listening on the supplied headphones was previously possible. The aerial is simply inserted into the 3.5mm audio jack socket, “Visual Radio” is selected as an application, and the speakers are switched on via , .All other radio functions operate as normal, including volume, station selection and storage etc.

The aerial has to be removed to answer an incoming or make an outgoing call, but the radio is easily re-instated afterwards by following the above procedure.

The aerial is 150mm long, 4mm diameter, can be adjusted through 180 degrees, is made of flexible wire and plastic coated for safety.

The aerial will probably work successfully with other Nokia Smartphones and other manufacturers’ phones, if they have a built-in FM radio which normally uses the headphone lead as an aerial, a 3.5mm headphone socket, and the facility for enabling built-in speakers when the FM radio is on.

Priced at only £3.99, it’s the most useful, low cost accessory I have found yet for my mobile phone.

Find it on ebay (UK) - search for “FM Aerial for Nokia N95″

Bad Guy in Knight Rider 2008 uses black N95 8GB… with touchscreen. Ha!

tagged with:, , , , ,

Knight Rider 2008Maybe should not support these kind of sites and darn this movie is bad… Knight Rider 2008 (TV version) is some combination of the old Knight Rider and Viper.

One of the bad guys uses a black N95 8GB which in one scene shows the screen with a numerical touchpad. Always fun to see that in movies they never use a mobile phone showing a UI that actually acts the way it acts for real.

Would you like to see the N95 with a touchpad?

Nokia N95 Travel Blog: Reporting back home with minimal digital luggage

tagged with:, , , , , ,

I received a message from Aaron, who soon will be relying on his Nokia N95 8GB full time, while travelling through South-East Asia.

From his blog:

soon im off going travelling to south-east asia, for quite some time, and i wanted to be able to stay in touch with everyone back home, i wanted to be able to easily keep an online diary and upload pictures and even plot the pics on a map, but…

i want to keep it simple, i didnt want to be lugging around expensive laptops or sitting in internet cafe’s for hours on end or even having lots of devices with miles of cables and chargers. what i wanted was a simple and very portable solution that fully intergrates all my blogs and facebook etc with as few clicks and hastle as possible.

So after much research i settled on a nokia n95 8g, a wicked smartphone which in theory could do all the above.

So, he now has all the needed equipment and tools:

  • Nokia N95 8GB
  • Nokia SU-8W wireless keyboard
  • Typepad blog (this is because it allows the upload of “text notes”)
  • FlogBlog (blog integration with Facebook)
  • Flickr account (for the pictures)
  • Shozu account (for Geotagging)

The trip has not started yet, but I guess it is interesting to see how Aaron has managed to prepare himself for blogging while traveling:

Riding the Wavelog: testdrive from Nokia N95

tagged with:, , , , , ,
So, there we go. I am writing this post from my Apple keyboard o my Nokia N95… using Wavelog.Still have to get used to the different workflow while writing a post, did not read any manual in order to test how it works “out of the box”. No idea what will happen with what I insert “down” or “right”, as the two options mention.Okay, enough text for now. Will edit this further later on.

So, the above written was posted from my Nokia N95.

The setup and usage of Wavelog is very simple. Now that I see the output, I am quite amazed. It puts the different objects (text, images) in a table structure, rather than simple markup.

Still, it is a simple and effective tool for blogging to WordPress or Drupal, as it very neatly uses XML-RPC to publish content. The picture added above was easily added, though I noticed that I could not access other folders than my gallery folder (too bad I keep my screenshots in another folder…).

Neither could I add categories (only general), nor tags…
Anyhow. Wavelog does open up possibilities and with future adjustments will be a good onboard blogging tool for the Nokia N95 and other phones.

I say onboard, as there is of course also a mobile admin plugin for WordPress… to use in a mobile browser.
