Interesting question over at N95Users forum:
I backed up my phone using Nokia’s backup-software before performing the firmware-update.
Now after the firmware-update I notice that all my previously installed programs doesn’t seem to be there any more. And some settings have been changed.
Is this normal?
I had the same problem when I updated the firmware of my Nokia N95, only I backed it up to my memory-card and restored it from there… so only by phone.
So the applications that I lost were on the phone-memory when I had installed them. I do not feel like doing a downgrade and then an upgrade again, but just to be sure, I now downloaded all applications to the memory-card. Hope that keeps them with next firmware upgrade.
Does anybody know how the installation of applications work technically? Is there a way to restore lost applications other than re-install?
Please share!

Personally, I’d suggest backing up any media you want, and then formatting the memory card and device (*#7370#) before performing a firmware update. I keep the .sis files for all of my applications for this purpose.
It’s sad, but this is the only way I’ve found to have a flawless re-installation process and not experience trouble down the road with apps not re-installing or restoring.

I definitely noticed it this time when I did a re-flash to see if I could get the WLAN to run more stable (which it hasn’t).
However, after the restart the phone automatically tried to re-install any applications it could find on the memory card, but failed on a couple of them and other just refused to run. Still pretty crap - Nokia have a way to go to get this running smoothly.

I was fearful that I would have problems because I did the upgrade using parallels on my mac (Nokia - please add mac support for all your applications). I then restored form the back-up on the car and it also worked. The only problem is many of my applications like Fring, and Gmail wont launch. Some will- DivX works. I guess I will just have to download them again.
