Nokia N95 Reader / Contributor questions

Some of our registered members and readers have put up questions that are good worth sharing with other readers…

  1. ssjauhal asks:
I was wondering what size the pics are when you take them at 5mp on your N95. On mine the avg size is about 500kb to 600kb. I was wondering about this because on my old 5mp Sony each picture size would be about 2 Mb each. And I am sure that I have the settings set to 5mp. Please help me out guys and if you know the problem could you please tell me how to fix it on mine, thanks
  2. khurram86 asks:
Ok, I know the n95 is having some bugs but what i am facing is just weird. My phone’s display moves whenever i press any button. It hangs, then its screen moves like a disturbed tv channel, even the screen starts changing colors, everything moves, the icons etc. It’s not even getting unlocked on the 1st try, I restarted it several times. Has anything of this sort happened with anyone else also? What should I do, will this come under the warranty or will the nokia people change it? Man I spent a fortune on it, help me!!
  3. vs.sureh asks:
Recently I bought N95 and found out that the sensor light (between speaker & front side camera) has not blinking after the power saver time out. Earlier when I was using N80 & N73 it happens. Please confirm is there any problem in my mobile, or how to enable the feature.

3 questions… and I do not have all the answers.

Question 1 is a good example of the myth that any 5 MP camera takes a picture which is 5 MP in size… No Sir!
Putting your settings to 5MP, means that you set your resolution to 5 MP.

Resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image. Resolution is sometimes identified by the width and height of the image as well as the total number of pixels in the image. For example, an image that is 2048 pixels wide and 1536 pixels high (2048X1536) contains (multiply) 3,145,728 pixels (or 3.1 Megapixels). You could call it a 2048X1536 or a 3.1 Megapixel image. As the megapixels in the pickup device in your camera increase so does the possible maximum size image you can produce. This means that a 5 megapixel camera is capable of capturing a larger image than a 3 megapixel camera.

Now, the pictures you shoot with your N95 are immediately being compressed. As you can see in your phone’s specs, the cam of the N95 shoots in JPEG format.

Because digital images take up a great deal of space, an organization called the Joint Photographers Group created a format called JPEG. This format reduces the size of the image greatly due to compression. It uses several tricks to accomplish this. A digital image stores information about every single dot in the image. If a photo has 20 red dots, it will store this information 20 times. A jpeg image might only store one dot and then a notation to repeat this information 20 times. However, jpeg images are referred to as “lossy” images because there is some loss of quality with this format.

So… there is your first answer. Like many point to shoot camera’s, the pictures are being compressed in order to reduce the filesize and therefor handling time, enlarge storage capacity, etc. Next step would be that a phone camera is enabled to shoot in RAW format… without any quality loss. :)

Question 2 is a usage question that I have no answer to, so reader, please comment on possible cause and solution!

Question 3 kinda surprises me… As far as I know between the speaker and the front camera is not a sensor light, but a light sensor… no blinking stuff. I have no experience with the other phones mentioned, so maybe somebody else can confirm/deny this.

There you go!

I have a question but not sure it is the good place to ask; anyway.

Is it possible to upload maps with different POI (for example in KML) on the N95 ?

I’d like to be able find cinemas, shops, bakeries, etc thanks to the GPS without having the need to connect via GRPS/EDGE or WiFi.

P.S. : I haven’t the N95 yet but to buy it very soon.

    Thanks.

Hey all, was just wondering if anyone can give me some info. Just purchased the Nokia N95 and am unsure how to transfer music from pc to phone using USb cable. Have installed media player to enable sync between pc and phone. After i have selected a song list to sync to phone, i am assured that sync has been completed by pc. When i go to music, there’s a messsage saying USB in connection. However, nothing seems to happen. Should i be waiting hours for 3songs to be transferred??
