Nokia N95 firmware update coming up!

tagged with:, , , , ,

Ricky Cadden of Symbian Guru writes the following on the coming firmware update (12.0.013 as it appears…):

I did get these three screenshots. The first shows that the firmware is dated yestday, 6-19-2007, and is numbered v12.0.013.Frankly, there’s not *too* many changes that I’ve come across. Available RAM after a fresh boot is still ~18MB. I did check for FOTA, and it’s not there, unfortunately. However, the new version of Nokia Maps is in there, as you can see from this screenshot. This also adds the ability of Assisted-GPS, which uses cell ID’s and their known location to help speed up the process of locking into a location.

With A-GPS disabled, it took the N95 a full 74 seconds to lock-on. With A-GPS enabled (and after a power cycle with battery removal), it was only 57 seconds. That’s a 17 second speed boost, and because A-GPS is a learning system that keeps track of known cell-IDs, it will get continually faster. Also, with A-GPS, I was able to get a location lock INDOORS! I tested this by walking from one end of the house to the other, and it followed me on the screen. Freakin SWEET.

The product code for this update is 0536062.

So… I will wait for the update to be available in order to experience any improvements myself. GPS-lock improvements sounds good… any second is one.
Hope that there will be some simple fixes too: Icons in call list, flickering when switching between SMS text messages, image compression settings…

Can you think of any more?

I wish Nokia would fix one SMS issue that really annoys me.
I type in text message and select a recipient from a group I created. When I do this quickly, somehow I lose the message I just typed in. Does anyone have this problem?

Yup, same story here… Actually getting to the point of typing the message itself is not even reached… the message is long gone then.

well it’s now 28/6/07 and I went to nokia.aus; nokia.asia & nokia.us all without finding the mysterious firmware update, so I’m with you Ben… just looking, Ben’s post was on the 23rd, not only isn’t the update available yet (5 days), but no-one has bothered to reply to his post! IMHO that doesn’t sound like good blogging to me (but what would I know!)

If you followed the original story from Symbian Guru (see the top of the article), then you’d know that this firmware update is not yet publicly available.

I’m anxiously waiting for this update. Assisted GPS sounds too cool.
