This weekend gave me the opportunity to use my N95 to the fullest.
Being away from the ladies (which is good every now and then) I spent the weekend with 6 good friends in the lovely sea-side city of Oostende in Belgium.
Going there by car and not knowing the city itself, I gave Nokia Maps a splendid test, as well as the GPS functionality.
Since last firmware update, the GPS locks on rather quickly, but I am too impatient I guess, as I think it still takes too long. I have not yet paid for the turn-by-turn navigation software, so I used the available functions as smart as possible:
- I downloaded the maps of Holland and Belgium
- Setting landmarks for important waypoints
- Planning route from GPS location to landmark
- Showing the route in 2D and 3D
- Setting categories to important and easy to recognize things, like petrol stations
This way, together with a regular map, we were able to drive straight to the apartment, without any detours.
With previous stories on the GPS functionality while walking in cities (James Burland was not so happy in London) I was afraid that we would not have a great companion in my Nokia N95 in the center of Oostende. But as it appeared, it had absolutely no difficulty finding enough satellites in the narrow streets.

Yeah, I know, strange photo, the one with the circle and black surrounding it. I made that one using a pair of binoculars as extra lens… not good, but fun for the moment.

I definitely appreciated the way your phone got us through Oostende. And on the way back, with our little “tourist detour” through the real Flandres it was a great help!
