Nokia Europe announced today the official release of the new Nokia N95 firmware update version 21.0.016 which is now ready to download and install with Nokia Software Update .

The new firmware comes with awesome new features as:

  • Flash Lite 3 so you can easily run flash video sites including my favourite site YouTube.
  • The Web runtime support is now included for widgets.
  • Improved Gallery performance, speed and controls.
  • Improvements to Bluetooth headset interoperability.
  • Standby-time improvements.
  • Faster Java runtime for Java applications.
  • Improvement to long text writing to web page dialogs.

In the next few days we will come to you with more features and bug fixes in this long anticipated software update.

i’ve got it, i use it, but i cant say that it makes any real difference to me.

i went onto Mosh and downloaded all of the 6 or 7 WRT widgets available… nothing magic there yet.

i’ve been to youtube on my phone, but it’s got serious troubles. a dedicated player is far better - perhaps a WRT widget should be made for this? for now, EmTube, et al. are far better for that.

other flash enabled sites? same deal, leaves me wishing there was a dedicated mobile version to use instead.

aside from that the only difference i SEE is that the barcode reader now uses object tracking as seen in on the computer vision sites at nokia research - that is, it puts a red box around the barcode and trys to track the barcode as you move around. kind of neat, but the barcode scanner worked fine before anyway (i use it to get long urls into my phone)

so - in short, don’t worry about not having the update available yet. the previous update is still the biggest boost to the n95. if somehow you haven’t found yourself able to get v20 installed, by all means sell your soul if you have to, get at least v20 installed. you wont be sad with v21, but if you work too hard to get it you may be disappointed that WRT and Flash3 don’t do more for you.

perhaps the only real benefit i’ve seen comes in the form of an update to the channels meadia service. it now includes FreeBe TV in the USA service listings. looks like it uses flash to play the video, so i doubt it was available before…

    thats my 2 cents.

just updated my n95, my partner has an n95 8gb - both phones have the latest firmware (including this new one) - I can happily say my ‘old’ n95 is just as fast as the new 8gb model! very impressed.

@bitflung: totally disagree re: Flash Lite 3. it’s far better than emTube if you visit the full site and not the cut-down version for mobiles. After trying a few videos out I simply uninstalled emTube as a waste of memory now.

@Taomyn: good, glad you like flash lite 3. i’ll have to give youtube another go, i just wasn’t too impressed right off. perhaps i’ve got too much other crap running at the same time (memory req’s?) i’ve got rotateme, gsm navigator, call filter, location tagger, etc. that i like to have running 100% of the time - i’ll shut them all down and try again.

my problem with youtube was that the the site is HEAVY, when i tried to watch a video it took forever to load, the virtual mouse cursor, for some reason, moves incredibly slowly over the flash content… in short, a WRT widget for youtube would be great: let me load up just the plain text interface and a single video. maybe i’ll try writing a widget - it would still use flash lite 3, of course, and even the built in browser - but will forego the heavy youtube site.

I updated mine a couple of days ago and have to say it’s cured many of the problems I was having - lockups, pour Bluetooth range, etc. One thing I did find very annoying was that the backup I made before updating didn’t do anything! It went through the motions, backup and restore, but nothing happened. What a waste of time that was.

ok - sorry, i guess i never had v13 available for mine… at some point i used NSS to change my product code - i had v12 then i thought - and went straight to v20. alas i’m old - memory isn’t so hot anymore - could be i’m mistaken.

i’d have yo say you’ve got a product code thats not updated, so you’ll have to wait to change your product code. mines EURO1 these days and it works great.

@ bitflung. Cheers for that little teaser of info :) looked up the NSS app you mentioned and im guessing its this nemisis service suite?? gonna download it and try to change my product code, because i would quite like a newer version. My question is, do i need to upload any certain files with it to change it, or is it jsut a setting that can be changed?

just update the product code - no files to upload. you might want to write down the original product code in case you want to switch back at some point. each product code gets a slightly different firmware (language packs are the only real difference i’m aware of - but hey, there could be more difference than just that)

so far as i know, you can change product codes a million times - but the rule is that if you do it even once it voids the nokia warranty (likely expiring any day now regardless)

    cheers

As bitflung said, Anyone getting the latest version message when they are clearly not running the newest firmware, can change the phone product code using NSS (Nemesis Service Suite) as said above it voids the nokia warranty. Orange and other providers are crap with updates. Mine was on the latest orange firmware before I changed the product code and updated it and was soooo slow compared to now with the newer firmware. Opening the slider the other way took twice as long and opening the lens cover unbearable. Much better now!

RAM reporting: i don’t know about the My Device app - i just looked for it and didnt find one - could be that it was removed, or isn’t part of the firmware for this product code? regardless, you could install the Device Status app (beta labs) though it goves LOTS more info and is likely less pretty than the app you are asking about. personally, i use Handy Taskman, it replaces the standard task switcher and gives free RAM when you press and hold Menu button.

VoIP: which one do you use? i use truphone, but i’m on at&t in the us - so i cant connect via 3G (n95-1 doesn’t talk to their 3G). truphone doesn’t even try to complete a call over EDGE.

my solution so far: i keep Fring connected to Gizmo/Skype/Gtalk automatically switching between EDGE and wifi. and i let truphone automatically roam onto wifi as well. i cant remember if i had to change the default port on truphone or not… but the option is there. so i’ve got myself logged in to 2 SIP accounts plus Skype almost 100% of the time. did i call this a solution? its more of an experiment: i’m still holding out to see which service will work BEST for me. i’m thinking i can likely connect via truphone using Fring instead if i want to - but gizmo is cheaper (except that truphone forwards to gsm for free, gizmo doesn’t)

just curious, what do you use?

can’t ‘find demand paging’? it’s not a program that you run, it’s a feature of the operating system.

updating the memory manager to include demand paging just alters teh way the phone allocates memory to applications, as well as how some of the built in applications request memory. that might sound like a trivial thing, but in all this feature is responsible for freeing up a HUGE amount of RAM (huge by N95 standards).

if you have an app that can show you your free RAM (i use Handy Taskman, it is by no means the only app capable of this - there is a free trial available for this and others) — you can use this sort of app to see how much RAM you have at any given time.

on my N95, pre v20, on a fresh boot i would have (iirc) about 16MB of ram available. that means that i only had 16mb to share between any apps i wanted to run. if anything behaved poorly and leaked memory, i’d run out all the sooner. back then i couldn’t open my web browser and maps at the same time - one or the other would just quit unexpectedly.

now, with demand paging, apps that come preinstalled in the firmware require far less memory, this is because the phone doesnt copy all the of code into ram — it allows some of it (data sections) to be read dynamically from the ROM (actually flash memory, but its the place your firmware resides - this is the place that gets altered when you update your phone). it also allows apps to only load code into ram that is actually required (text-sections, this is the stuff that actually runs on the CPU inside… the instructions of the app). with demand paging, you might load MAPS without connecting to the GPS and so the maps program doesnt have to load the positioning libraries (pure hypothetical: i dont know that maps supports this. but the OS supports it now and thats the point. without OS support, maps would NEVER be able to do this. now, maps MAY do this, even if it CAN not, yet).

    thats my understanding.
hope this clears up demand paging a bit for you.
