Received this question from Geoff in one of the comments on this blog:
“I have an issue getting the maps/gps to work. When I first tried I had wrongly put in the 2G card, rectified that next day. I see the world map spin around and then progressive descend thro country to state to roughly where my city is and keep going to yellow screen and no map detail. Have tried to vary scale but I can’t get to see map detail. I have the data transfer sign. I have satellite reception. Can anyone help as I am anxious to get to the map part… tks in advance!”
First a question to Geoff:In what country and what city are you located?
Does anybody else experience the same problems? Or did you and you have it fixed now? Please share your experience!

Posted 17 Apr 2007 at 1:38 pm ¶There has been a few mixed reports about this situation Geoff, there is a solution though, and it is to do with the formatting and file structure of your memory card.
first of all if you take the memory card out it should work because the internal file structure of the device should be formatted in the correct way, if it doesnt there may still be a larger problem, but we’ll say it does work for now.
The process involves you formatting your memory card and starting afresh. to do this go into the menu > tools > memory card > options > format memory card.
once the memory card is formatted, open up maps again and try zooming in, make sure you have full gprs connection, or a wifi connection is probably best to start with as it’s much faster and will give you a quicker idea to if it has worked, which it should!
If this fails you can always use the maploader software, it will preinstall any maps you want so not only is it much quicker, you wont get charged for data by as you dont have to download the maps through your handset. info on the map loader can be found here http://www.smart2go.com/en/help/maploader
and of course keep an eye out on the WOM World for other problem solving solutions etc. really hope that works for you

Thanks for this elaborate and high quality contribution!
@ Geoff: Please share whether this has helped you out.
Posted 17 Apr 2007 at 10:08 pm ¶You can put the MemoryCard directly into your computer with the maploader software but don’t forget, before you use the maploader software, youhave to have run the Maps application at least once with the memory card in the phone after formatting.
One ‘feature’ of the maploader software and Maps application is that it is very difficult to tell what maps you have already downloaded. If you try and download a map again it will report back that it has successfully downloaded much quicker if it actually already installed.

Advice has been very much appreciated indeed. Geoff
I have an issue, where when GPS is started with my memory card inserted, the map is loaded, but with little detail. only the main roads come up. but when i remove the memory card and restart the GPS, all details are loaded, like streets, landmarks, side streets etc. none of which appears when the memory card is inserted. i have experienced the same problem with another N95 that i have in store.
Posted 23 Apr 2007 at 4:07 am ¶i have loaded the map onto the memory card and the issue is still unresolved?? i called nokia care, which were no help..
I can access all maps on my N95 but can not get it to receive satelite coverage. Please Help

I’ve got the same kind of problems. As you wrote I took out the memory card, but the problem was still the same. Seems that there’s something wrong with my internal file structure? What can I do about that? Called the support desk in Holland, but they couldn’t help me also.
Cheers Paul

rgds
Ah yes Geoff your right. format the memory card (in the fone), after backing up all your data. then run the gps, preferably using wifi, tho if your on Vodafone, its included in your cap. then transfer across your data again. any other Q’s. let me know and i’ll call my Nokia rep.
