Nokia N95: Un-locked vs. Operator-Modified

tagged with:, , , , , , , ,

RingNokia links to the following video, made by the people of Truphone, that shows the (possible) differences between an un-locked Nokia N95 and one modified by its operator, in this case Orange.

It sure is a good example to make sure that your operator allows you use your N95 to its full extend.

Don’t forget that Operator Variants aren’t the same as locking. You can use Nemesis Service Suite to change the Product Code of your phone (shown on the IMEI label inside the battery compartment) so that when you use the Nokia Software Updater it will replace the Operator Variant firmware with Generic Firmware (and probably invalidate your warranty). Any Lock will not be removed.

Conversely you can ring up your operator for an Unlock code and unlock the phone but this will not change the Product Code or Operator Variant firmware.

One thing they forgot to mention is price difference, it’s all well and good saying buy unlocked but how many of us really have morethe 500 pounds exspansys want for the handset?

Luckily i’m with o2, they don’t tend to mess with handsets too much so all’s well.

Maybe the phone didn’t want to show the SIP functions because you were annoying it with your smacking lips every 5 seconds.
