Nokia N95 usage: battery vs. powercord

tagged with:No Tags

QuestionSo I got my N95 yesterday… Yeah yeah, I could have spammed the web with yet some more unboxing pr0n and first impressions review, but I kinda got review-blind in the past weeks. ;)

So first situation: I used the phone yesterday till initial juice ran out and hooked my N95 (Sand by the way, firmware version 10.0.018, not even listed in the Dutch Support pages… grmpf) to the charger.
This morning: started using the N95 while it was still connected to the powercord. After about a minute, the screen blinked and I got the message: “charging battery”.

:| Does this mean that even while I am connected to continuous powersupply the phone uses battery first?

I can see situations (working on your desk) where you keep your N95 connected to power. Writing a report on a businesstrip, I would like to keep my phone juiced without notices that battery is charging…

Technically, does this mean that the battery cannot be bypassed? While I was waiting for a substitue battery for my Powerbook a few months ago, I worked it without battery, just powercord. Trying this on my N95… nope. That does not work.

So my question: How does this affect the battery? Should we keep an eye on it till it is fully charged an then drain it again? I am no techie, but what does continuous energy through a battery do with it?

Would it not be better if the energy bypasses the battery as soon as it is charged?

I wouldn’t worry, it only means that for a split second, the circuits noticed the battery wasn’t 100.00%.

I’ve used the N95 on charge for hours with no ill effects and no drain on the battery.

Ehh, never saw that behavior. Not using the charger from the box, not using the charger in the car.

1/ Could be your powercord has a faulty connection. So when you started using the phone you were draining the battery, then moved slightly so the charger was connected and it topped up the battery. Wait untilt he battery is half discharged, connect it up to the charger again and move it around.
2/ The peak power drain of the N95 may well be higher than the lowest rated charger; this would make sense for the phone to always drain the battery rather than risk burning out a lightweight charger.
3/ As it a Lithium Ion battery, repeated topping up should not significantly shorten battery life.

Do not use the phone with charger in, it will drain the battery then charge the battery giving it battery memory. Thats where the battery says full but only lasts a couple of minutes.

run the battery down as much as possible then charge it

Hmm, I really am used to this Nokia behavior; all the nokia’s I ever had did this. Frankly it seems like the powercord charges the battery, and the battery is used to do stuff. So when you use it on the cord, it wil keep refilling the battery. Usually it is filled within seconds after you’ve stopped what you are doing though, so that shouldn’t matter to much :).
