Traveling with the Nokia N95 [daydream]

What would traveling with the Nokia N95 look like?

a rose is a rose is a roseI asked myself this question last weekend, while I was enjoying a few days off with my girlfriend in Paris (yes, it was verrry romantic). [By the way, I was quite amazed that I did not see any promo for the N95 yet, but I do not exactly know what Nokia’s release-planning is for France. Any local info appreciated]

Anyhow. While strolling through this beautiful city, I imagined I was a bit ahead of time and was traveling with my Nokia N95 in my (small) pocket. Here are some of the visualizations that passed my mind:

  1. Pre-travel
One of the most common annoyances during a trip in a strange city is getting lost. So with the N95 I would prepare myself well and pre-load some routes: From the airport/railway station to the hotel, from the hotel to the places to see and I would favorite some nice restaurants, clubs and shops. As seen in various demos of the Nokia Mapping Software, it should be fairly easy to prepare this.
Most probably I could find a way to get the subway maps on my Nokia too, just like it is possible for your iPod…
  2. Plane / Train
This trip we took the Thalys, the international train, which takes you from Rotterdam to Paris (Gare du Nord) in about 3 hours. Instead of filling my stow-away table with my iPod, mobile phone, book, newspaper and a bottle of water (as I did now), I see the freedom of 1 device with the Nokia N95:

    • Listening to music with the Bluetooth stereo headphones
    • Watching a movie on this portable private cinema
    • Getting my fingers in motion with one of the high-quality games
    • Reading latest newsfeeds
    • Tracking the train’s route via GPS, making sure it is not taking a detour… :P
    • Enjoying ALL that space on my little table… ;)
  3. Mapping
So then in Paris, I would let my Nokia N95 guide me through the streets to the waypoints set on beforehand. And for the interesting extras I could always consult Nokia Maps (Smart2Go): Where to go, what to eat, what to see, where to buy… And I could send favorite locations by MMS to friends who might visit the neighborhood in time.
  4. Pictures
Visiting the City of Love, you cannot leave without having taken some nice pictures of you and your lover. The 5MP camera should deliver what you need in point and shoot photography. As their is more than enough entertainment on the streets in Paris, I would use the occasion to shoot some short movies of street- and subway-musicians…
Uploading the pics to my Flickr-account instantly (preferably with GeoTags) or if relevant with a bit of text to one of my blogs.
  5. Starbucks
Grande Mocha Frappuccino Blended Coffee A big con for the Netherlands and a big pro for Paris: Starbucks. (OMG: 20 Stores: HEAVEN!)
I would get out my Nokia foldable keyboard (to be specific: Nokia SU-8W), get connected to the wireless internet connection, do some blogging, check some mail, listen to some streaming music, check some YouTube movies, chat a little either by text or byVoIP and browse the web… all this - of course - while enjoying my Grande Mocha Frappuccino Blended Coffee, slurrrp!
  6. Editing
And then after a few days enjoying this city, on the way back, I would edit the pictures and videos I shot: Retouching en enhancing the pictures, combining the videos of the street-musicians and adding credits, intro and outro…

It is a nice daydream for now, but: Pre-fun is half the fun already!

Guess that there will be some ways that you can see yourself using your N95 while traveling… If you want to share them: Please use the comments!

I’d always make sure that I had some ‘Gotan Project’ with me . . . it’s perfect music to edit Paris video to.

Ow! Do not get me started talking music…

Cool and Funny that you mention Gotan Project, because I listened to Inspiracion/Espiracion on the train… :)

As soon as I can (considering the needed N95) I will load with some nice music and start editing…

Instead of going to Starbucks, if you’re in Paris wouldn’t you rather go to a nice little *French* cafe even if it doesn’t have WiFi? :) After all, you don’t want to play with your N95 all the time. Especially in some parts of Paris where if someone sees you with one, they’re likely to try to steal it.. :-o

You are totally right… the real trip to Paris is factually proof that I can be without laptop and wifi for 4 days… ;)

Pity to say that most of the “small” French cafes we visited had real bad coffee… :(
