Using my Nokia N95 as a wifi-finder

Simple as hell, yet highly effective.

While killing 8 hours of transfer time at Charles de Gaulle Airport in France, I use my N95 to check where I can use which of the different wireless networks. Saves me the hassle of starting up my Powerbook…

By the way, I have this functionality OFF by default, as it is yet another way to shorten shorten your battery life.

:P

also don’t bother with psiloc hotspot finder as it will produce errors on both the N95 and N80 when installed.

Having a hotspot spotter, ahem :-) , always at hand is indeed quite a feature. I scan periodically as well, sometimes laughing at the odd names people give their networks. And what do You know, now and then there’s an open one as in free. Ooh…! :-)

Using it in conjunction with a laptop is a very clever application as well, never thought of that.

It is true of course, having the scanner on costs huge amounts of battery life, but it’s not as useful as it could be anyway - wouldn’t it be much better if it were to notify You once You’re in the vicinity of a known network? I’m a T-Com customer which means I can use several thousands of their hotspots all over Europe, and it would be nice to know in advance when I am near one, as they are not all in obvious places like McDonald’s or Starbucks.

Well, anyway, those are just my five Eurocents… :-)
