Cyclone Gabrielle had a devastating effect on some orchards in the North Island last year, wiping out about 25% of New Zealand’s apple crop. This led to a temporary shortage of local apples.
We talked to Jerry Prendergast, United Fresh President, to find out when we can expect to see New Zealand apples arriving in store again.
When will we see the first NZ apples back in stores?
The first of the new season apples are due for picking and to arrive in stores from now on. We can expect to see them available in the next 10 days. The first fruit is out of the Gisborne region – soon followed by Hawke’s Bay.
How has cyclone Gabrielle affected this year’s harvest?
Once we get into the main crop supply, predominantly out of Hawke’s Bay, (Feb, March and April) we will then be able to provide detail on how the yield is performing.
Early indications are; orchards with trees that were not damaged or wiped out due to the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle are healthy and have produced what is described as a normal crop of apples.
Which varieties will be available for NZ shoppers?
The first of the fruit are Royal Gala varieties.
What can we expect in terms of pricing?
The first few weeks we can expect to see retail prices around $6kg to $7kg – as volume increases this will move down in price to $3 to $5 kg in the coming weeks.
How long does the local apple season last?
Once the harvest is underway we can expect to have NZ apples available right through to the end of December.
